About boot disks.

I know you can get boot disks that contain an OS. Couldn't you get a boot disk, in my case for vista, and always run you're OS from the disk allowing you to completely format your hard disk? My hope is that this will completely restrict any and all write abilitys thus completely securing system files from malware and stupid people who don't know what their doing.

Would this be something that would be practical? Would this hinder the ability to use windows update? If so, what options are there as far as using a USB drive instead of a boot disk?
