netbook reaally slowing down

OK, so I've been using my netbook for about a year (I think) without having any major issues. Then recently, out of nowhere, it started acting up, really slowing down, even hanging on a few instances. I checked task manager and I saw that the CPU usage would spike up to about 85-99 percent at times, and physical memory usage would remain at about 80-90 percent for the most part. I think that is why the computer is running really slowly. But why? I haven't done anything major to it. All of a sudden it just became that way.

Help?

It's Windows 7 starter by the way.

In the Task Manager, click on the processes tab and then see what's running your CPU and memory so high. Anything suspicious? You can also run HiJackThis and post the logs, would help to see what's running.

So C:\Program Files\Elantech\ETDCtrl.exe doesn't look too healthy. From my research, it may be an Asus program, and it may be a keylogger. Boot into SafeMode with Networking, download Malwarebytes and run it.

I use an Asus netbook, so it's probably the first case. I'll download and run Malwarebytes just in case. Will post results when done.

OK so malwarebytes didn't find anything malicious :/

My netbook currently has 1GB of RAM. I've noticed is that on a normal (non-safe) mode, used physical memory would be ~900MB on a normal load. Firefox hogs about ~100+MB of that, so if I exit out of firefox, it will go down, but only to around ~700MB. That's still a lot I think, considering that I don't run too many (if at all) memory consuming programs (that I know of) - see task manager. The only "big" programs I run mostly are firefox, AIM, Skype, and an antivirus software. CPU usage also tends to be on the higher end as of late, as described above.

On safe (with networking) mode, CPU usage would be down tremendously, mostly under single digits, spiking only to about 10-15% only once in a while, so I don't see a problem there. RAM usage, meanwhile, would be down to 500-700 MB (depending on how much firefox hogs). Still a lot, no?

Also, I am having trouble shutting down my netbook properly. During the shutdown process, Windows is supposedly "configuring" my computer before shutting down. But it gets stuck there for a while. Actually I think it just stays there the whole time. I've always been hard resetting my PC in that situation so IDK if it's just a matter of waiting for it to shut down (which is a looong time) or if there is something wrong.

Try disable all startup apps and run "chkdsk C: /r" at the command prompt to scan the HDD.

hope this helps!

end this process C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe as this is known to thrash disk i/o. Click on start and type in msconfig and stop this process from auto starting. Ive seen this on many machines
