My HP Laptop has been running pretty hot lately. The core temp stays around 34*c,so that doesn't seem bad,but the fan runs pretty high most of the time, and the underside is pretty hot to the touch.

2 days ago, while attached it to a printer,it made a little crackling noise and let out a little volcano puff between the Y and U keys. When it completed printing,I shut it down and removed the battery. That night I put it back together and started it and it ran OK.I'm typing on it now,no further incident.

What could the problem be? Do I need to drug test my computer?

34C is fine. How is that hot for a laptop? I understand if your assumption is that it should be lower, but mine at home is well ventilated and it hits 50-60C during average usage which is well within its design specs.
