Why Mac?

use what you like, and what you can afford. Who cares if its Mac? No one goes on Lexus's boards and says "Why Lexus? I can get the same thing in a Buick!". If you like Buick, drive a Buick. A Mac is like a Lexus. It's the same damn thing as a Toyota Camry, just with added padding and shinier paint. If you like it, buy it! Personally, I like Windows and Linux, so I use them.
P.S.: I will admit though, it is fun pushing Mac people's buttons.

To continue with the car theme even more though , IMO the lexus looks better . And it certainly rides a lot more comfortable and probably quieter compared to your toyota . And id be wiling to bet that the lexus is better built than the toyota Plus the Toyota lexus comparison isnt the best because lexus is the luxxury divison of toyota .

Compare your Toyota with a Mercedes though , sure enough for the added price tag you will find excellent ride quality , quality build and innovative added extras and better .sure enough Its doing the same job sure but it will keep the same job for a lot longer and it looks better whilst doing it

For me it wasn't about the laptop just doing what I wanted it to anymore , I wanted it to look good and last longer as well as perform my tasks .my dell did what I wanted it too until the hinges broke after 18 months of use .
I am hoping my macboook pro is going to last me at least 3 years and to be honest I cant see any reason why it wouldnt.

I mean surely to go back to the car theme if you just want to get from A to B , say the daily 5 mile drive to work why would you even bother with a car just get a bicycle it does the same (and probably faster) its because you want the added comfort of a car for instance when its raining , its basically the same principle why I bought a mac instead of any other laptop . I could have had the bicycle (another dell laptop) but decided I wanted the car and the additional comfort which for me is brought about by the build quality

Besides who are we to judge the value of another persons reason for buying a particular thing . So what if someone buys a mac soley because It looks good , Thats their decision and that might be very important to them I know when I was buying a new laptop it was in my list of desirable attributes of my new machine

back to the car theme as its seems a popular one why do people buy a high performance sports car , if you ask me its because they care about image . After all you might have a Ferrari but your still sat in the same traffic jam as me . Yet we dont hate on people who buy Ferrari like dude you so should have just bought a focus

whilst i wouldnt call myself a mac person as I own machines of both platforms I must admit its fun pushing windows peoples buttons by saying this , my mac hasnt yet got a virus and I dont have antivirus installed , but my windows machine has had a few virus's and it has a security suite installed

lol...sometimes, yes but that was not my goal at all this time. I knew that mac stuff was expensive but I was LITERALLY AMAZED when I saw that the 17" mbp was 2500 bucks with what it had in it. It raised the question, why mac?

To continue the car theme because I love cars, call the HP I mention a toyota avalon...30-40 grand, right. Nice cars. Not basic and not a limo. Then you have the Lexus IS-F...an expensive car ( 80 or 90-ish grand I think) for argument's sake but, when you look at the hardware, without even driving one it makes sense. (I have ridden in one though, as a side note and yeaaaaaa...real piece of work there...) On paper, mbp is like a high end camry's hardware for the IS-F price. You wouldn't be like "WHAAAAAAA!?!?" if you saw a Camry with a 90G price tag and read the sticker just to find a regular old camry?...lol

IMO, that 90 grand camry better be a miracle on wheels on paper, in the parking lot and in the driver's seat. This is why I ask. Maybe Mac IS that miracle on wheels. See what I mean?

Have you ever used a Mac? They do work really really nice? Also Apple screens (i hear) are made by Samsung, and Apple (from what I've ready years ago) has had a long contract with them specifying that Apple gets first dibs on their best screens, so any screen coming out of Apple is top notch.

a Mac is a Golf GTI, all the other small hatchbacks are undercutting it. xD

This is not doing Apple computers much justice. Volkswagon's have a nutoriously bad reliability reputation in the US. For instance, 55 out of a 100 for 6 years running. Apple hardware is just as good as any PC hardware. OS X for basic tasks is amazing. I do not like their UNIX implementation. I like Linux's UNIX implementation better.

If I were to buy a Mac, it'd only be for the pretty OS. Otherwise, I'm very happy they exist as it keeps MS slightly on their toes. However, in my opinion Android/ChromeOS will eventually make OS X pointless (this comes from the growing adoption rate of Android and ChromeOS devices). It's going to be a big Google/MS battle. I hope MS wins. Sorry guys, but Google IS EVIL in my opinion!

You're comparing a phone operating system to Mac OS 10?

...oh, and Chrome OS is dead in the water. No use for it, now that tablets exist.

IMO isnt it the other way , surely the company dominating the market in terms of sales share is keeping all of the competition on their toes . MS can afford to release a crappy OS (can anyone say windows ME) and leave relatively unscathed in terms of market share wheras if a company like apple released a crappy OS it would look a lot worse as it would be a lot easier for people to dismiss them on the basis of this is why they just dont have the market share microsoft do .

Beside that point you have just discredited any knowledge you appeared to have in your claim that a mobile phone operating system is going to make a fully fledged desktop operating system obsolete .2 completely different markets with completely different aims , OSX isnt just a pretty face it can do everything windows can do aside from gaming

Your last statement is incorrect, a Mac is a perfectly capable gaming computer.

the problem is finding games that have a Mac version, Steam is the best way.

So, one of the biggest open-source software companies, that provide the best search algorithm in the world to you, free of charge is evil? :p

the problem is finding games that have a Mac version...

Then it's not capable. lol

Chrome isn't DOA at all, actually. I got chosen as a beta tester and got sent the CR-48 as part of the deal back in...uh...I dunno, actually. Anyway, I ended up selling my hp/win 7 netbook cuz my wife and I liked the chrome puter so much. After using the thing for a month or 2, it was an obvious game changer. I thought that, if they started selling the thing for 150-200 bucks, it would really change a LOT of the computing landscape.

...and it would have. As we all know, they are currently nowhere NEAR that cheap. I too thought for sure they would be DOA at their current price point. I was just glad I already had one cuz it really is a convenient little thing and I actually use it often...lol

Then...low and behold, I read an article not too long ago about how one of the current models is among the top 10 sellers on Amazon. I was amazed. We'll see where it goes. I'm not getting rid of mine any time soon.

Android/Chrome are completely different than mac. That does not factor in this at all.

Google IS Skynet, though...lol...but I LOVE Android (Had the original G1 back in the day, now I'm on a Galaxy S. Made every post here from it, as a matter of fact. I'm also getting an Asus Transformer tablet in the coming days.) and, when it comes to Apple, Jobs and iOS, I'll take Android any day...but my detest for Apple is another thread.

Samsung does (maybe not anymore...) Make the screens for Apple and they, until just recently, made all their mobile cpus, too. However, Apple found someone else to make their chips. I can't help but think it's because Samsung started making better phones than apple. The Galaxy S2 is supposedly the best handset on the market right now. I'm yet to see one due to their cost, but they are supposedly amazing. And if the applephone 5 doesn't have a quad core cpu, it will be coming out a gen behind hardware wise. Nvidia's Tegra 3 Kal-El is supposed to be arriving in tablets by fall and to cell phones by the end of the year...and THAT is when I will be upgrading my phone.

I should have said you cant game as easily on a mac , like there is varying levels of success playing games through boot camp as well but to be honest unless you want to be messing around trying to get the best performance in boot camp I dont bother trying to came on a mac . and again with steam you have to find mac friendly
there is however an increasing number of titles released for mac which means in years to come gaming on a mac will be just as easy as under windows

My take on this issue is it is up to the opinion of the person there is no "better platform" pc or mac however I was talking to someone back in january who always sat next to me in class who had a macbook and she said the only place you can buy parts for a mac are from apple or so they told her when hers broke. And they charge out the @$$ for the repair. Other than that she loves the mac.

I think they are just too expensive to justify buying one over a comparable pc. And from what I am hearing they are discontinuing the plain macbook the low end model. Can someone verify this?

My main issue is with the apple company itself. I have owned 2 ipod touches and the first one was only 2 weeks old when it mysteriously stopped working. I sent it back to apple to see if they could replace it under warranty. A few days later they called me and said it was damaged by water and was not covered and shipped it back to me at my expense of course. I knew about the whole water damage detector inside the headphone jack so I checked that and it was still white indicating no water damage. Also it never EVER came into close contact with water. I bought a new touch from costco the next week though. Just never buy anything from apple store directly because they screw you on warranties. The same can be said about many other stores as well but apple store and online store was added to my black list.

Sorry maybe a bit of a rant there but just my take on apple and macs

I wouldn't get a mac. But I know people who I respect (and intelligent people at that) who would choose one.

It comes down to what you do with your machine, what's important to you and what's not so important. If you're just talking about the hardware in them then Macs come across as undoubtedly bad value for money most of the time. And they're less compatible with most software than PCs (some specialist software aside.) But some people prefer the style of the OS, they come with more useful applications out of the box than windows, they're generally built better than other laptops, they play very nicely with other apple gear and there's no denying they look much better.

Personally, none of those things really matter to me - I think the "comes with more apps out of the box" argument is dwindling, I'm not a huge fan of OSX (yes I have tried it, I just don't find it as intuitive as everyone seems to claim!) and the dwindling Java support is a killer for the work I'm involved in. But there are people who would go for it for legitimate reasons.

Quite honestly I don't see the point of such threads. They're both valid choices of machines, different people have their reasons and no-one is ever going to persuade everyone in the PC camp to convert to mac or vice versa. Try them out, stick with the best one for you and let that be that!
