One of the best file servers that I've made out of old parts was with FreeNAS. It was an old 400MHz Pentium with something like 256 MB of RAM. It works great for a file server and is very easy to configure.

Do NOT use freenas 8 imo... I used it and can not get the file storage part to work at all. Freenas 7 works perfectly fine every time. In my opinion, if you'll use freenas go with freenas 7.
Not yet, i tried 7 before i was going to do that and found it worked, so i didn't bother getting help after that point. I usually stick with what works and don't touch what is fine unless i really need to.
