MS Have been working on Windows 8 since before Win7 was formally released.

I've tried Linux every so often over the last decade and I'm surprised how much it has improved lately. I don't see myself purchasing Windows operating systems when I can get Linux free. Of course, your mileage may vary, especially if you like computer gaming.

The only thing I don't like about Win 8 will be that everything will be hosted in the cloud. M$ pretty much stated they will use your data how they see fit, but this is really driven towards piracy. It still doesn't sit well with me, however, that your agreement contains wording that they can share your data "without prior consent." This wording was from an Office 365 whitepaper, but I would not be surprised in the least to see this bleed over to Windows 8.
