Hello CF, just made an account and have read some posts already. Looks to be a wonderful community of people and I appreciate any help that you could give me.

Well here goes. Basically I have been hearing clicking noises coming from my computer for quite some time now. It started, I would say about 3 months ago. Not really knowing what it was, I pretty much just ignored it. Until today. Was playing a video game and started hearing the clicking again, but the difference was every time it would click, extreme lag would follow and the game would freeze for about 5 to 6 seconds then catch up.

After doing some research, it seems to be the general consensus that it would be the Hard Drive. I took the HD out and tried to listen to it to see if it was the issue. And it indeed does seem to be the source of the clicking noise. Although, even as I type this, I hear no noise at all. It seems to be very sporadic and random.

Anyways my question is, if it is indeed the HD causing the problem, and if it is I was wondering if I could have assistance in which HD to purchase as I don't really know much about computers. I'm a heavy PC gamer and would like to buy the best or close to the best in whatever capacity my computer can handle. Most certainly am not rich tho XD. Here are the HD specs, and dxdiag. Once again, I really do appreciate any and all help. Thanks guys.

I would go with a Western Digital with a 64mb cache. The size of the drive doesn't matter, just get what you think you will use. You can use this to boot from and as storage. Now, if you want the best - meaning; quick access times, games load in a few seconds and amazing read/write speeds, then I would go with an SSD. Since SSD's are fairly new, they are expensive, so just get enough space for windows and the programs you use every day. A 64gb-80gb should do the trick.

Most games won't take advantage of a 64MB cache drive, as long as the aureal density and spindle speed are capable of delivering the info. The problem is that a lot of programs aren't sequential in nature, which is where cache helps out. That's one of the reasons why most 32MB drives perform nearly the same as 64MB drives.

I agree with your assessment however, griieve, clicking drive is one of the main reasons for your troubles, so find one with the amount of space and performance that you want - the WD Black Editions are great, and there's nothing wrong with getting a 64MB cache version, just know that it doesn't make as big a deal as the companies would have you think.

Wouldn't go with WD, not because they make bad drives, quite the opposite, but because Samsung drives will give you more performance than the black drives whilst costing less for similar capacities.

From your post, I see you have a 1TB drive, so assuming you actually need that space:

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

If you aren't using that much, then a Samsung F4 is as quick as an SSD (in all areas except access times), whilst being very cheap:

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Note though that the Samsung F4 2TB is a storage drive. It has much lower read/write times and much slower access times too, both because of the drive being only 5400RPM and having other power saving features that reduce speed of the drive in favour of using less power

Samsung drives are excellent drives. I tend to recommend the WD's to folks more just because they have a longer warranty than the Samsungs (well, the Black Editions usually do that is), and some people value that more than just a name, but you've got me nodding yes to Samsung as well. I love the ones I own.

Well the thing is, although people like warranty (who doesnt ;)), 3 years from now you will be able to pick up a comparably sized hard drive that is faster for pennies. Look at the price of 180GB drives now to see what I mean. That is what I had in my system 3 years ago, a single 180GB drive and at the time was plenty
