Harddrive Failure/Error

I've been having some weird things happen lately that I think I can attribute to the hard drive. Windows will just stop responding randomly, and I'll let it sit for a half an hour to see if it works, and nothing, so I have to manually restart. Then I'll get Disk Read Error's where I'll have to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete OR I'll have to use Windows startup repair, Which works sometimes, but often says it cannot correct the problem. Or It'll make me run Chkdsk. It does all three of these things randomly. Sometimes my computer starts up fine, sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I'll let it sit over night, (Like I just did) and when I turn it on in the morning, it'll boot up just fine.) I've tryed adjusting the boot settings before, like turning of the CD drive, ect. And I've already reformated the harddrive, reinstalled windows, ect, and I'm still having the problems.

When it does run Chkdsk, it usually (About two or three times) says something about "Insufficient data to fix (Insert thing here)" Usually, it says insufficient data to fix bad security sectors or something like that.

So is my harddrive ruined, and should I think about purchasing a new one? Also, I've heard about partioning. Does that mean I can identify the bad areas of the harddrive, and disable them, and then just use the good parts of the hardrive? I have a 465 GB Harddrive, so some lost GB's shouldnt be a big deal. And furthermore, how do I know if this is some sort of internal error, or a physical error?

And last but not least, if I have to go about purchasing a new harddrive, how would I know whats compatible with my current hardware and how to install it?

Thanks so much.

It is imperative that if you have any data on that system to BACK IT UP NOW

Repeated issues with disk access, check disks, and windows errors like this are highly indicative of hard drive failure. Do NOT continue to use the system in this state or you WILL lose EVERYTHING.

Partitioning is like putting up those little gated fences in your house to keep the dogs out of the kitchen, etc. It's only useful when you want different areas for data sets. For example:

On my server, I have a storage pool of 640GB. I have it partitioned off into three different areas. 1 area for the OS, another for a data store, and a last for a swap file. That way, if one area gets too full, it doesn't affect the others.

Based on what you're asking, you're going to be getting a new drive soon, so what kind of PC is it? OEM (HP, Dell, etc) or did you build it yourself / have someone else build it?

It was a custom build computer by someone else. I can post the Dxdiag if you want. (It's long though :p)

Also, I never saved anything important on this computer, just games, so I don't have anything to lose. Already took my pictures off of it with a SD card.

The guy who made it has been busy lately, and I don't want to bug him. I figure if I can figure out what I need myself, I can install it and not have to pay him some money for making him look at it.

I forgot to mention a great Hard Drive only utility for Windows is called "CrystalDiskInfo" and should give you more information on the drive.

Hard Drives
488GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS-00V1A0 ATA Device (SATA) 40 °C

Any SATA drive on the market right now would be a good replacement.

Yeah, sounds about right from Crystaldisk. :(

Yes, that drive would be fine, and replacing a hard drive is literally like this:

Locate hard drive inside case after opening it up.
TOUCH the sides of your case while the AC cord is connected to ground yourself, and then unplug the cord, being careful not to shuffle your feet around on carpet or anything
Unplug the power & data cable from the back of the hard drive
remove hard drive from holder
insert new drive
screw / clip the new drive in
connect power & data (they only go in one way) and then reconnect the cables
turn the PC on, install Windows.

That's it. Hard drive replacement is cake compared to other things on the system. :)

So at all times keep one of my hands anywhere on my case? If I unscrew the side of the case, I can just lay my hand on top of it to ground myself? Should I unplug the power chords from the computer before beginning? (Most obvious thing, but I should ask anyway)

Also, Since I'm going to be buying some new hardware, I figure I can give myself a little upgrade. Any advice one what would be some nice upgrades from my current CPU and Graphics Card?

Sorry if I'm bugging you too much! :p

You're never bugging. This is why I come here. :)

Your Current Processor is:
Newegg.com - Intel Core i3-540 Clarkdale 3.06GHz 4MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80616I3540

I would recommend getting:
Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-870 Lynnfield 2.93GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80605I7870

That should tide you over for a while, since it is a quad core AND it has Hyperthreading (8 threads!) and should just smoke any multithreaded apps you have (games, etc should benefit nicely as well)

Your motherboard is reasonable for the type it is, but the CPU upgrade you do above will be the last one for the board, but it should easily give you a couple of years.

The GPU is where things get fun. The CPU may be limited as far as upgradability, but if you do the CPU, you can put just about any GPU in the system provided your power supply is up to the task. a "4800 Series" GPU is pretty vague, but knowing that much, I'd recommend a minimum of this card, depending on games played:
Newegg.com - XFX HD-687A-ZNFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

beyond that, your RAM is fine where it is, unless you find yourself in constant need, 4GB is enough for most things these days. I have 8GB at home, and I almost never touch it all unless I'm doing video rendering work. The servers in my siggy have it because they're database servers, so they tend to eat up a lot.
