i'm trying to see if i can get my xbox to hook up to my PC monitor. i've been looking around but i'm rather new to this stuff.

Due to the differences between composite video and VGA, I can't help you with the details. I'm not an electrical engineer.

Remember, he is going from composite video to VGA, not VGA to composite, and apparently would like engineer an adapter himself
