Trying to fix my Keyboard USB wire

So my Logitech keyboard USB wire seems to be broken. It'll work, then when I move the wire it stops working. So I figured I'd try to fix it but I'm just having a little difficulty.

First I thought I'd swap it w/ a Microsoft USB keyboard wire but when I got the wires swapped I noticed that Microsoft put the 5 wires in a different order than Logitech so the keyboard couldn't work w/ this wire.

If I knew where the break was I would just easily splice the wire, but because I don't I wanted to replace the entire wire. I can't seem to find anywhere that just sells USB wires that simply plug into the keyboard connection so I want to just make one.

So here's my question, what the connection at the end of the USB that directly connects to the inside of the keyboard called? I can't find any information on that part. If I could just get an unused one I could just take any USB cord and connect it w/ that. My problems would be solved.

Just want to be as clear as possible but I'm talking about this little white connector that the 5 wires from the USB wire are crimped into. This connector then just connects directly into the keyboard.

Well this ended up being really long winded for such a small, easy job. Thanks for any assistance!

He's just posting for count and spamming his signature.

I take it that you want to build a replacement cable with a new connector inside the keyboard? Unless you have a few catalogs and/or a part number handy, your best bet would be to either reuse the old connector by splicing into the wires coming out of it (yuck) or just removing the old connectors and soldering the new wires directly into the board.

Hey thanks for the responses and sorry for my slowness. I was at PAX East for the weekend. Here's a picture of the connector I'm talking about. Both my Microsoft keyboard and Logitech used this connector so I assume it's fairly common. If there's an easier way to fix my wire then I'm very open to suggestions, I'd just like to my keyboard to work again. Thanks.

I don't think the picture's uploading? So I'll just post the link. http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/820/keyboardusbwire.jpg

can you post a picture of the plug from a different angle? perhaps a picture of the socket too..

if all else fails (you just can't find a replacement) you can use a small screw driver to push the tab (which is the bit that you can see sticking out latching the wire into the socket) in with a small screw driver, then pull the wires out of the plug. then buy some new pins to go in the plug.
they look like this:

and are available from most decent hobby electronics stores.

Thanks root, I'll try that if I can't find the piece.

So I emailed a local electronics store and they responded and he thinks it's a 5 pin with .156 on center spacing and says that they have them in stock. So I'm gonna take a ride over in the morning (w/ the wire in hand just to be sure it's the correct one) and buy won. Thanks for the help, hopefully this is what I need!
