My graphics hard has been having hiccups every now and then for a little while now, but today it seemed to just give out, while playing a game it crashed and the pixels distorted, the game froze and I had to reboot my PC. This happend about 3 times before I gave up and stopped playing.

Can anyone tell me if it is my card going or there might be a differen't problem, the card I am using is a GeForce 8600 GT (also is this card any good these days)

Most likely your GPU just gave up on itself.

I would try buying a new one, the 8600GT's are quiet outdated these days.

Operating System
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Kentsfield 65nm Technology
RAM
3.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 332MHz (5-5-5-15)
Motherboard
ACER G33T-AM

I concur with the 460GTX, an alternative would be an ATI Radeon HD 5850 or 6850 depending on gaming tastes. Your CPU is getting a little long in the tooth as well, but the GPU upgrade now will serve you well until the Kentsfield runs out of steam.
