I plugged in my external hard drive and it told me it needs to be reformatted. However, if i reformat won't i lose all my files, how do i transfer all of my files so that i don't lose the files and then transfer everything over prior to reformatting?

I've had this issue before and boy what a pain it is!!!!

my first step would be to get a live version of Linux like Puppy Linux or something that you can boot from CD so you dont need to install as Linux will often show you all of the files on the Hardrive that windows will otherwise hide if it is not in the correct "format" or slightly corrupt.

Try this first and post back your results.
