I'm getting a new replacement drive from Sony soon (I hope), and I will need to send my old one back. What are some recommended programs/software that wipes the HDD completely to the point where nobody can recover any files or information.

I was thinking of using the WD diagnostic "write zero" thing. Should I just run it once, or should I run it multiple times? If more than once, then how many?

My preferred utility is Dirk's Boot and Nook (DBAN) but I've heard good things about kill disk too. The write-zero thing is essentially formatting which might not be as through as you wish.

DBAN covers a drive multiple times in one run so you should be good doing it once.
