You can give it a try.

BIOS flashing isn't dodgy at all, it is just if you cut corners in any way, you are raising the risk of something going wrong, which is extremely unlikely, but if it hapens, and you don't have a dual BIOS board, you will brick the board. The risk is low, but when it cocks up, it cocks up big time.

I would say make sure it is the BIOS first though, there is no point in doing it if it isn't causing the problem. Make sure for certain that it isn't the drive first by using a known working drive in the system
