Which OS is best for my laptop?!?

I recently acquired a second hand Packard Bell "EasyNote(?)" (Unsure of model).
It has the following specs:
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T1600 @ 1.66GHz 1.66GHz
RAM: 1.00GB
System type: 32-bit Operating System

It has currently got windows 7 on it which is unbearably slow and fails occasionally.
I intend to use the computer mainly for th internet, music and useful applications which i would like to be run at maximum speed.
Games wise i do not intend on playing new games as i know the laptop will not be able to run these, however i do enjoy a little Counter-Strike and The Sims 2 from time to time.

Can anyone suggest which operating system will utilize my laptop best in conjunction with that which i would like to use it for?

Windows XP.

plays games, can run on a 300mhz cpu and 128mb of ram.

Get windows XP, a good anti virus and Tune up utilities. You will not have to re install your windows every two month or so like most people complain about.

Or, you could install any number of Linux programs for free... Ubuntu is a good starter OS
