So it appears that someone was able to get your usb to work. Have a look at jebus.nu/tech-corner/sprint-u300. This all makes sense, and should work for your system too. He tested it under Karmic which is a couple back but it should still work.

In ubuntu 10.10 usb internet work automatically without making any changes, i have tested using tataphoton +. In other older version try to connect over mobile internet in network.

I don't disagree with you entirely, but not everything will work right out of the box. There are a lot of things that require a little bit of work to make some usb devices work, especially wireless usb devices.
