Hi. I just know a very minimal amount in regards to computers, so bear with me on this... I have an old Dell GX270 that I rarely used anymore, however I had a lot of information stored on it that I'd never moved to my laptop. It recently ceased working due to what it says was a "thermal heat event" From my understanding, this could range from a minor fix to a fried motherboard. In a worst case scenario, how would I go about retrieving the info of my hard drive, if the computer itself is non-functional. just in case this is helpful, I think the GX270 has 1GB RAM, but I'm not positive, and it has XP. I would like to put the info on my Dell XPS 1645 that has 64 bit Windows 7 and 4GB RAM.

You can purchase an external enclosure like this and use then connect it to your laptop just like an external hard drive to retrieve the files.
