Scenario:
One server 3 clients. All machines running xp home edition.

Problem:
If I switch on firewall on server, clients cannot access server to print, or update program that resides on the server system.

Please suggest a solution.

What OS are you running on your server? Can the clients access the server (shared folders or pinging) if the firewall is on? What firewall program are you using?

You will need to configure your firewall software to allow access from these client computers. basically Firewall turns off many ports that are required for connection. Just open those ports for clients and they will be able to access your server.

You should be able to go to the firewall and enable the exception for File and Print Services.

If you can't find that, try opening these ports:

TCP 139 & 445
UDP 137 & 138
