I have a sony vaio VGN-FZ18E laptop and not used it for ages due to getting a mac, i went to boot it up the other day and it would not load up.

It boots up in safe mode only so i reinstalled vista but still the same thing happens.
When booting up the screen has lines in it (see image)

When in safe mode if i go to Device manger i have 2 errors mass Storage controller and a unknown device.

any help get this to work again would be great thanks

was there anything heavy resting on top of the laptop?

has it been dropped?

it looks like the video card is giving you problems. if not the video card, then definitely the monitor. Perhaps check the monitor ribbon cable, make sure it hasn't come loose.

Computers when they load shake hands with the hardware.
If something does not answer, it will stop loading.

It's a well recognized fact, that baking hardware re-solders the traces on a PCB board when the system or device is having problems. It doesn't always work, but melting the solder just enough to refill the gaps it was originally in can sometimes fix issues like this.

More often than not however, the hardware is defective and needs to be replaced.
