720p vs. 1080i

I just recently bought a Sony Bravia 46" LED HD TV. The TV supports 1080p but my cable box outputs up to 1080i. Everytime I switch the cable setting to 1080i and exit the menu it automatically switches the setting back to 720p. Does anyone know why it might be doing something like this? I am completely lost. Thank you so much in advanced.
