no operating system

I was trying to install linux on a disk that had windows xp, the computer just shut down, the next time i restarted it, it displayed the message no operating system. i have tried to boot from cd rom using xp or linux, f1 -f12 it is not working. i also tried to connect it as a slave disk on one of the pcs but it is not working

it sounds like you wiped your hard drive clean. im not completely sure though. it sounds like something has broken or gone wrong. could explain in more detail please.
