no operating system

I was trying to install linux on a disk that had windows xp, the computer just shut down, the next time i restarted it, it displayed the message no operating system. i have tried to boot from cd rom using xp or linux, f1 -f12 it is not working. i also tried to connect it as a slave disk on one of the pcs but it is not working. how do i fix this
 
Put in the Windows XP CD and boot from CD. What errors are you getting when trying to install the operating system? I have run into this before and a Repair won't fix the Master boot record. You may be able to throw in the Linux CD and install Grub from it. Which version of Linux do you have? Here's a link to the Ubuntu 10.04 download and here's a link on how to install the Grub loader from a Live CD. That may or may not work. I full reinstall of Windows may be the answer :(
