Service Packs

Soooo
I'm working on this computer project. The system previously had WinXP Home w/ no service packs. I went to load SP2 onto it and it loaded fine. It said a reboot was necessary, as usual, so I rebooted. It booted back up and loaded the WinXP splash screen, then a blue screen that said "Please wait..." Obviously it was for SP2 so I let it sit. I let it sit for about 30 minutes before finally doing a hard shutdown.

I booted it back up again and now after the WinXP splash screen, instead of going to the please wait, it was just a black screen. Now this is all I get. However it does boot up fine in safemode.

Does anyone have any ideas what's causing this problem? Or how to solve it?

If it boots fine in safe mode then go to the control panel and do a system restore, you may have just had a bad sp installation.

Right because something very bad went down during sp2 install, sp3 was a good idea but apparently didn't fix the issue. Can you still get to safe mode? If so restore that mofo and see what happens.
