Tweaking my new computer?

So I am the owner of a new dell laptop.

Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
6GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 - 1GB


After playing a few games I am somewhat disappointing with the performance. I expected the games to be running at a much higher fps with little to no lag.

I consider myself somewhat computer savvy but I have never owned a core i7, or anything above a dual core processor.

I was wondering if there are some things I can do to tweak the computer to see a better/major performance out of it.

How do I even activate turbo mode? (what is turbo mode?)

What games are you running and at what resolutions? The 5730M isn't exactly a top-of-the-line card, but it should be fine at medium-low settings on recent games.
