I want to build a PC able to run modern games (SC2, etc.) on high settings and to just be able to run smoothly for everything else. Here is what I've got so far (budget $700-$800)

Optical: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231275
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674
GPU/PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.408243
OS: Windows 7 student upgrade ($65)
I have HDD/monitor/keyboard/mouse already

This will come out to be $742.93, or $786.60 after tax/shipping/rebates.

Thoughts?

so some people are suggesting getting the Radeon HD 5830 instead. Is there really a difference for games that aren't crysis?

I don't really want to spend an extra $60 for not that much of an improvement and so many people have suggested the 5770...

For the price, it's hard to beat the HD 5770. The 5830 is faster, but not worth the extra expense. A 5850 would be a better bang for your buck if you're going to spend the extra money.

The 5830 actually runs hotter and uses more power than the 5850, while it's the same length. It's basically a 5850 that's slimmed down and clocked faster. So it underperforms the 5850, but uses more power and heat. I would go with the 5770 and if you really need more power get another for CrossFireX later.

You can get a 5850 for $20 more than a 5830. Don't even consider the 5830.

AMD really should have only cut one more ALU in that thing. It is outperformed by nVIDIA cards at the same price, which is really bad.

Pretty much. The 5830 is just redundant in my eyes.

Wow, you guys have just saved me a lot of time and research.

I have the same video card and the same psu and was wondering which other components I should get to compliment them, and since it's all thumbs up from respected posters, I'll just copy the rest of the components from here! :D Except I want the 965 instead of the 955 cpu.

Still, I know nothing about mobos and even less about optical drives. Bookmarked fo sho. Thanks everyone and thanks TC for magically picking the best components for ME! lol.

That's exactly why I bought the HD 5770. It's only $160 and it performs incredibly well for the money. If you need more power, just CrossFire them.
