so i recently scavenged this http://www.amazon.com/Creative-CT4760-SoundBlaster-Digital-Output/dp/B0010XV8RA from one of my old computers from a couple years ago would it be better than onboard on my asus m4a78 plus mobo

Yes, a dedicated sound card will always be better than onboard sound.

If you use home surround sound, forget it. It can't do 5.1. Sound Blaster Live! series aren't the best too, they can cause your system to lock up when using Vista or later.

However, it will perform better, but not a significant lot. You won't gain like 20FPS in a game, but maybe up to 2-3FPS.
