An Altair would be incredibly expensive. Somewhere in the $1000 range I think. Go for a Commodore 64. I got at least 3 of them laying around. Really easy to get. Or an Apple II*.

If you do get a C64, you might be interested in playing a Guitar Hero clone on it. Link here. I played it before and it's freaking awesome!

There is still a lot of hacking and homebrew going on in the C64 scene.

C64 is the way to go because there is such a huge community that still uses them.

If you go on some classic gaming emulation forum and wait a bit, people will offer commodore 64s for free. You just have to pay 30$ shiping.
