How can I secure my data?

Portable HDD? Are you sure?
What would happen if this too get corrupted due to any reason?

when I was at university I used to have a pretty good strategy.

All my work was saved on my university file space,
all my work was copied via FTP to a PC at my parents house.
All my work was transferred using disks/USB disks.

if any one copy failed me there was two more.

if you're worried about a disk failing then use two disks.

Off line disks are more secure than on line connected disks, but only whilst their not connected.

if you really want to secure data from theft or prying eyes then encrypt it.
if you're worried that your data store will become corrupt or unreadable, then use multiple data stores.

Yeah..these discs are not feasible on long term basis. They can get crash any time. So what would you do at that time when you need important file immediately and your storage media is not working.
This is the major reason that you should opt for online data backup support system to access your lost data at anytime even after many years.

I would strongly suggest that you encrypt your files for added protection. Also, you can install antivirus software to help protect your system.

Yeah...make sure to install effective anti-virus to avoid any harm due to viruses or malwares.. Keep them updated from time to time.
