Gaming monitor

I'm building my first gaming computer and I need some help picking a monitor. I want either a 22" or 24" 1080p HD monitor. Also what kind of drive should I get dvd or Blu-ray. I want a blu-ray player for my computer but don't know if i should wait until they are cheaper. I am thinking of building one of these two computer so I want the most compatable best looking monitor for it.( If you want, feel free to comment on the computers also)

Get a Radeon 5870, much better than the 480. Also, Blu Ray is on the way out IMO, I think streaming is going to make any format obsolete.

As for monitors, anything made by ASUS, Samsung, or Dell is gold in my opinion.

To be honest, the X6's when they are released will be very expensive I'm guessing.

Its up to you either to go for AMD or Intel though.

The AMD build will apparently be slightly better at gaming, whereas the Intel build will be slightly better at number crunching a lot of tasks at once.

Huge, HDMI connector, and Asus so you know it's good.

Go with the 5850 and flash it to a 5870. It'll run about the same as a 5870 and it's a 100 dollars less. Either one will have better performance than the 480 with less heat and less power consumption.

Ummm.... as much as I love ATI, the GTX 480 does outperform the 5870 in DX11 tasks. As far as DX10, it performs pretty close due to poor optimization. Give nVIDIA a while and it will beat the 5870.

That being said, it is not worth the extra $100 for the gains you get in some games. Get a 5870 or a Visiontek, ASUS, or HIS 5850 and flash it to the ASUS 5870 BIOS. It will perform about 5% slower than a HD 5870, but cost $100 less.

BTW, 8GB of RAM on a LGA1366 build = fail. It will slow you down. Get 6GB. For the AMD build, get 4, no more is needed for gaming.

Get a DVD+/-RW DL. Blu-ray support is awful on PC right now, I have a BD-ROM drive on my HTPC. It's a huge pain , since you have to update it constantly, and it tends to crash in the middle of a movie. Get a real blu-ray player, I've seen them for $100 before.

Like I said in your last thread, the phenom II x6 simply will not be worth it for a gaming rig with these specs. The only way it would be worth it would be if you had four HD 5870s or quad SLI GTX 480. Save your money for improved graphics cards.

Give me a budget for a monitor, and I can help with that too.

For the gfx card I am willing to spend the extra $100 dollars because I want this pc to last for a long time also I don't know how to flash it to the ASUS 5870 BIOS. (This is my firt build) So if you have any info on the subject or know a website that does please let me know. Also how does more RAM slow me down? Can you explain? I'm looking at spending $200-$250 on the monitor, no more than $300.

i have a hanns-g 23" hdmi monitor. i like it alot, and it comes with a cable thats DVI on one end to HDMI on the other, so you dont have to use a stupid converter dongle. and it was CHEAP

8GB is dual channel. His intel build is LGA1366, which supports triple channel DDR3.

Either way, 8GB is too much for most everyone out there. It would never be used for quite a while.

OP: The best price/performance right now is a 5850. If you look around, you will most likely find one for ~$280. Get two, and it completely destroys the GTX 480. If you want to stick to single card, the 5870 is too close to the GTX 480 to justify the difference in cost between the two.
