Problem connecting my desktop to the internet

Hey all - I am new here so apologies if I haven't quite put this in the right place.

In my house we have one desktop computer and three laptop computers. We've had the same wireless router for around three years now and it's never gone wrong.

My router is currently connected to my desktop computer, however, the computer cannot access the internet, while the three laptops in the house have no trouble connecting via wireless.

I can't figure out why my desktop can't find any connections.

Just to add - the router hasn't always been connected to my desktop, I moved it up into my bedroom today and plugged it into the phone line up here. Could this affect anything?

Please note that I'm really not very good with computers, particularly when it involves networks and connections, so please keep the specialists terms to a minimum!

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

This might be a stupid but have to tried soft-resetting the router or unplugging it and plugging it back in?

Phone lines are not meant to be plugged into routers unless they specifically required for DSL connection.

Yeah umm that was like the first thing I tried lol. There's no actual phone up here but I have the little box thing on the wall where I could have one. That's where it's plugged into.

Do you have a modem and router? Your modem will go into a "phone line" (if you have DSL) and your router will need to be plugged into the modem. If it is an "all-in-one" type unit (which is what I have) then make sure that you have the PC plugged into one of the numbered ports. Also make sure that you have the PC set to 'automatic' in the IP and DNS options.

If the laptops still work, that leads me to believe that this is an all-in-one unit and that it is hooked up correctly to the phone jack. Was there something else that used to be hooked up to it, like a different computer? Some ISP's require you to call them if you change the device connected to their modem/routers (so that they can update the MAC address of the connected device). That might be the issue.

Do you have any link lights on the router or the desktop? are you getting an ip address? is it a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx or a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx? can you ping the dfault gateway?
