And I have a optical drive and an external hdd and keyboard monitor mouse and software.

I plan on doubling that ram eventually and another gfx card.

Get a 955, 965 is a waste.

RAM is way overkill. Get some G.skill ripjaw @1600MHz

there are some cheap ones really dont know anything about them thought
get an i5 or i7 for redering

OR you can get a G80 based NV card and softmod it. Takes about 20 minutes and works awesome.

It depends on what program he uses. Some depend on cpu power while other gpu.

If he is really into 3d rendering, he should just build a workstation. Go for intel xenon and quadro
