I require firewall security software on my system. But don't know which one to go for. Can the experienced people on this forum tell which is the most comprehensive software to go for? Preferably free. Also I would like to allow a few programs through the firewall and ports as well. Advise on how this is done would also be appreciated.

The free version of zonealarm fulfills the needs of most (including me.) That said, there's a few free ones out there that are good, different people just have their favourites!

Oh, and pretty much any firewall will allow you to customise it with rules on what is and isn't allowed through. Exactly how you do it differs depending on what you're using, but it's usually pretty simple.

Zonealarm is ok. I personally don't use a firewall other than Window's.

Nothing beats a hardware firewall (most routers).

I'd have to agree with this. The windows firewall isusually good enough if you are behind a router (that has a firewall built in which most new ones do) or some other hardware-based firewall.

Otherwise Berry's recommendation of zonealarm is dead on the money.
