so im building a gaming system. and i understand geforce basically the higher the numbers the better the card for example a geforce 5600 is not as good a a 9800 or a 9700. how does ati work? is ati the same? the bigger the numbers the better? or do they work backwards? because im really thinking about getting an ati but i never had one before so i dont know much about them... thanks

The first number is the series. The second is a grouping within the series. the third is the model in the group. 4th is zero.
This is on the HD series.
Basically higher number doesn't necessarily mean better, like a 5670 will not beat a 4890, but Nvidia is the same way.

Within the same series, HD5xxx for example, the higher the following 3 numbers the better the card should be. Then, as foothead state, a lower number on the 5 series may be better than a higher number on a 4 series, and vice-versa.

Actually, the 4770 was better than the 4830 so that isn't necessarily true.

Well...in most cases. It's hard to explain because they make so many versions of a series.
