PC fan canI hook it up to a battery?

I have some extra PC fans and would like to use them in my mini greenhouse for gardening. Can you hook them up to a battery? Is so please explain.

Yea sure.

Use a 12V Leisure Battery or car battery.

Preferably a 12V source as anything less would mean a slower fan but usually 5V-7V is required to get them turning.

It's 3 wire system obviously how would I ground it, just to anything metal around not sure on that.

The 3 wires on a computer fan are...

Red - 12VDC
Black - 0V
Yellow - Sense

Basically ignore the yellow lead completely unless you use it to monitor the speed of the fan.

We are talking about cooling fans for computers and not another type of fan?

Yes PC fan out of an Alienware. So forget the yellow thanks.

It says on the fan Black - Red + Yellow F.G. I thought that might mean ground.

Cool no prob I figured it would work just thought I would ask before I cut the wires. If I need it again I can solder it together or connect it back together another way. Now I'm gonna have to break into my other junk PC. Oh yeah I just have it hooked to 9 volt for now, just testing it out.

Why not use a 12V AC adapter from some old electronic?

It'll help you save on batteries.
