So I really need help here

I got a computer for free from a friend, I want to upgrade it but I'm having a hard time on what to get because I know nothing about the computer. The model is HP Pavilion a1130n. It has 4 512mb DDR memory, it has no video card which is what I'm trying to find for it. It has a PCI slot but I don't know the difference between the different kinds of PCI's. I don't know what kind of motherboard is in it either. It says ATI IXP 400 on it, I also have 232gb of hard drive space. Someone help here I'm lost =/

once you have figured out what you have and how many we can try to take it from there
but more then likely it would be better off for you to just build yourself a new budget build

Don't forget the AGP 8x slot. While it's not a PCI slot, it was the major graphics interface from about 97 to 04. There are different "speeds" of the AGP interface which are 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x. They all came in chronological order, but the 1x AGP came in 97.

If your motherboard looks like that then you have what you need.

The Black slot is PCIe and the white slots are just pci. You'll be using teh PCIe slot for a video card. Any cheapo will do, probably get one for 20-30$ off of newegg.
