i have a OptiPlex GX620
it has a pentium 4 cpu and 2gb ram and i have maxed out it's abilities. i run linux and i constantly am getting little freeze ups from cpu hitting 100%. I think i have to upgrade the cpu and ram.

can i just up the ram to 4, or is it really better to up the cpu and ram? But i don't think i can just replace the cpu without replacing the motherboard. I am still trying to understand that. or do i just replace the cpu heat sink with a water cooled system and overclock?

Any suggestions? I am willing/able to spend about 200$. can i even upgrade for that much $?

what do you use your computer for? that would help determine what you need.
are you sure it is the cpu's fault? i would think that a P4 would be able to run linux. (what version are you running?

heres an idea for you, i think you could build a decent machine for $200 using everything from your dell and a few more parts.
im not really sure what you want/like. but here goes...

you really need a mid sized case to build with, that way you have room for everything.
heres one for $24 that looks pretty good.
free shipping if you buy it before fri.

about the ram. you probably would be fine with 3GB so you could just buy another 1GB stick. $25

the CPU: i have an Intel Pentium dual core E2180 2.0Ghz it works great for everything ive ever thrown at it. (gaming, surfing, anything)
you can get an E series CPU for $70-$90

get a mother board for around $50 from newegg.com

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ntel_pentium_dual_core-_-13-157-173-_-Product

and get a few fans to keep everything cool.
$15

case - $24
CPU - $81
Motherboard - $45
1GB ram - $25
fans - $15

$190

of course there are a bunch of other motherboards/cpu's in that price range that would work but you get the idea of what you can do.
