Dual Monitors Not Working

I have a new 23" Acer Monitor (full HD) and a old dell 15" monitor and i want to run dual monitors. I have a DVI slot and a VGA slot and my new monitor is int he DVI and old is in the VGA but i dont want to stretch my background onto the second monitor, i want my main monitor just normal and the other one blank so i can just drag a program over to it. How would i set it up like this? Thanks

What graphics card do you have?

Go into the screen resolution settings.
XP - Right click desktop, Properties, Settings tab, I'd imagine the VGA monitor is grayed out, click on it and then click the extend desktop to this display check and click ok.
7 - right click desktop, screen resolution, then the rest is basically the same.
I'd imagine Vista is one of these, but I never used Vista long enough to know.

There is no grayed out option and only allows me to change the main monitor. It does say at the bottom " Display: (Multiple Monitors) on NVIDIA GeForce 8200 "
