Similar to Garageband?

Best free, similar one I've found out there is probably Krystal. Never really used it for any extensive project though.
 
for making beats i'd suggest FL Studio 8... for making songs i'd suggest Cool edit pro 2 (awesome for making songs...)

Anyways mixcraft is your best bet, I try it, it has loads of features, and its relatively small is size so thats what I would use dude.

Just because you dislike a product, doesn't mean you need to bitch about it every time it's mentioned on this forum.
 
I have Reaper 3 in my collection of audio software and it is brilliant. And it will give you a selection of VSTi's to play with. And its a fully fledged audio sequencer/mixer too.
