Processor vs Graphic Card

I wanted to get a Phenom II 940 for my system since its only $150 on newegg but the HD 5770 is only $15 more...

Since i basically only play games on my comp would getting the HD 5770 be a better choice for my build? (specs in sig)

Haha I was confused for a second, thought you wanted either a processor or a GPU. I was like you need both lol. Personally I would go for the Processor, it's quad core. Plus your GPU is a 4850, not top of the line, but it's pretty good. I would get a processor and a GPU like next year.

the Proc, and as i personally know, the 940 kicks ass, i have one, and with my 4850, it maxs ANY game and even plays crysis on high settings with no AA at 1080p or my 22in Westinghouse

You need both and CPU for the win BUT the GPU takes ALOT of stress from the CPU
remember, you are not just using the CPU to play games. I ve played Crisys on high settings using an Atholn X4 620 with a 4890X2

crossfire 4890 i hope you mean.

and he knows you need both...

he is stating which he should upgrade...

his 4850, or his proc.


i say the proc because a quad is much more powerful, and the 4850 is already a great card.

Why not get say an athlon x4 620 and a second 4850 (look on ebay for a used one, theyre going really cheap right now)? That would give you better performance than a 5770, and you'd get a CPU upgrade (though itll cost a bit more, but not much)

$200-- thats not much more than either option you posted.

Trust me, crossfired 4850's give you amazing performance. I have the 4850 x2 in the gaming/HTPC and I can max most everything at 1920 x 1080 and if you were to get the 5770, it would be bottlenecked by your current cpu.

Yeahi forgot to mention i had a limit in cash my bad.

But ah i totally forgot about crossfire. And the 620 can overclock to 3.9ghz which should be more than enough speed to overcome the lack of an L3 cache. thanks foothead for mentioning that combo +1

My motherboard is newer than the biostars and ASRocks that can enable the 4th core so it uses a different method when enabling ACC. so i cant enable a 4th core

I was thinking that the Phenom II 710 might have better performance because of its 6mb cache, considering my motherboard can handle the higher reference clock, i could probably get atleast 3.5ghz stable.. idk three cores seems alittle weird to me

But the propus can hit 3.6-3.8ghz when overclocked but it doesnt have the 6mb L3 and it might not even hit 3.6 on my setup but if it did, it would surpass the 710 because of the extra thread.

idk im gonna try to find a benchmark to see the 620 propus' performance at 3.6ghz

I'd get a 720, not a 710 personally, so you get the unlocked cpu multiplier.
