Software vs Hardware

I like both.

I enjoy modding and fixing electrical, and sometimes mechanical, items. I will always repair, mod, update, my computer myself. Recently I upgraded the PSU in my audio interface and replaced the dull orange/yellow power LED for a blue one. And this, connected to my Mackie mixer gives me all my audio I/O to/from my computer. Leads I make myself connect everything together.

But I couldn't do without the software. I don't code but I rely on it a lot. Most of the audio DAW's with the sexy plugins with PS and all the other apps. I use whether it be internet or production.

This is a rather broad question - I was approaching it from the System building or programming angle, but software or hardware really can mean anything - as stated earlier pretty much everyone does a bit of both. Some as simple as connecting a monitor can count as hardware work and something as simple as typing a letter could count as software...

To put things in perspective a bit, there's some "key" skills that pretty much anyone working in IT (on any reasonable level anyway) will have. Most people, hardware or software based, could easily order some components and put together a fully functional PC. It's really as simple as it gets these days - 20 years ago it did require some degree of specialist knowledge (anyone who installed a troublesome old ISA card will know what I mean) but for a good decade or so pretty much everything has just, well, gone where it fits. Most programmers I know could easily set up a pretty large network too. Similarly, most guys I know that work in computer building can install programs, type letters and probably knock out a bit of HTML. If you're talking about doing any of these and working / looking to work in the IT field - then yes, your answer should definitely be both!

So to be honest, in my opinion the original question is so broad it's pretty much useless. Perhaps a better question to ask would be what's your preferred field / specialist area within the industry and how competent are you at it, what's your experience level etc.? That way we could get a better idea of what sort of things people prefer (and the hardware software divide should be pretty obvious anyway most of the time!)

Clearly IT as a sector now a days is built up of lots of versatile technicians who can dabble quite happily. But i was more asking which you personally prefer to jump in to. Which you rather do a little project in, i'm not saying pick one and the other will be removed because one without the other would fail to serve any purpose at all but most people have one they'd rather play with on a day off. What's yours?

Glad at least that this incredible broad and blank question has got us in discussion.

Sorry, perhaps "useless" was a bit harsh - what I meant was if the question was phrased more towards the realm of what specific area you enjoy / specialise in, we might get a clearer idea of what people like to do.

Replies that say "everything" aren't really that useful ;)

I'm a hardware guys mostly, but I'm OK when it comes to installing and changing software components on occasion.

Hardware. I'm horrible with code, but the last class I took with any kind of coding was intro to web design 6 years ago.
