Strictly performance, the HD 4850 is significantly better than the 8800GT, and the Phenom II X4 955 B.E. is significantly better than the Core 2 Quad Q6700 in most applications (particularly gaming), the Q6700 comes close in some encoding applications, but over the P2 X4 955 B.E. beats it.

Here's an example benchmark showing the Phenom II X4 955 B.E. vs a Core 2 Quad Q6700.

You can probably find more benchmarks around, every one I've seen shows the 955 > Q6700, which is to be expected.

Depends what you're doing with the processor. 4850 is better though btw, but a gts250 beats the 4850 iirc.

It really does depend on what you intend to do. Intel has good instruction sets for video/audio compiling/editing. Rarely between like CPU's (AMD vs Intel models) can you definitively say which is better. Also depends on the programs/games you intend to use with the processor most. Some games are coded for Intel benefits, some for AMD benefits. Same applies with GPU's.

As for your 4850 vs 8800; I'd say the 4850.

We built two identical systems at work last week, the only difference was the video card. One had a Sapphire HD4850 and the other a Zotac 9800GT, the benchmarks were very close but the 4850 scored around 30marks higher on 3DM06 - not a lot but enough. I'd have to bank the 955BE for CPU too - more current and man those chips pack a punch. Keep in mind as well, 955's are based on the AM3 socket (AMD's current socket) where a Q6700 is skt775 - soon to be completely discontinued by Intel in favour of i5/i7 CPU sockets.

If you're going with the 955 though, make sure you get a DDR3 board or you'll only be holding the CPU back. I'd recommend any Gigabyte DDR3 board to suit.
