Using proxy servers for making browsing anomynous

Hello all,

I am working for a small company assisting in the IT maintenance. I was recently reviewing employees web use and I can see that they are using the following sites to bypass to the company firewall and reach sites they are not supposed to access

pimpmyip

concealme

hidemyip

I was wondering if anyone had a good resource about these sites as I don't really want to go to the sites in order to learn about them. Doing a couple of google searches didn't really return much info except how to get to the site and similar services. Are there any good articles out there on these services?

Thanks,

Well depending on what kind of firewalls your company is using... You should be able to deny access to those sites... Just the same as any other... Also I am sure you could force the firewall or router to reject proxy connections...

So it turns out that because our connection to our head office is infact managed by an outsourced IT company there is not a whole lot that we can do - as our contract relies on them to administer the firewalls (I cannot gain access to them) to deny access to various sites.

I could insert a managed firewall inbetween our network and the externally managed firewall and hope that the outsourced company don't notice and then configure our internally managed device to our liking, but I am just creating more work for myself that some other company is supposed to be doing.

If you are paying them to manage your corporate security get on the phone and insist they block them. You're gonna want to block that entire range as these ppl change ip's often to get around blocks that companies put in place.

It might also be time for you to remind your employees of their AUP for the company while at the same time making a flaming example of one or two of the violators...trust me..it will stop in a hurry.

i wonder if you are waisting your time with this web use. i would start looking for a new job asap if my employer blocked web. of course i understand pornsites but come on ... we're all adults and if someone checks facebook every now and then its all good. we all need small breaks to perform well.

you'd go through a lot of jobs then...

it's pretty standard practise to block off unfavourable areas of the internet.

to the OP, you've got a managed service, use it.

tell your supplier that you want this blocked.

if your supplier only provides the line then you need to implement a proxy server and have all but the proxy server denied access directly to the internet. then people will have to go through the proxy and have to be aware that they can't go to certain sites...

but really I'd have thought that these proxy sites etc should just be added to your block list. either by you or by your managed service provider
