How to upgrade

ok so I have a gateway ML3109 laptop.
1.6 ghz I know slow
1.5 gb of ram
80 gbb hardrive ( i need more an external is better only 20 gb left in this one)
ati radeon graphics
intel celeron m I know slow but works ok!
OK so here is the deal
I need more harddrive space can you guys recommend me a good one? external preferably.
ram is not a problem I will buy online
What are other ways to make it faster. I download a lot so I need good speed overall.
my price range is $150
can you list as many possible ways to upgrade this laptop!?

It seems that hard drive space is not really your issue, keep about 15% of the hard drive open for defragging and just overall system performance.

There are lots of issues that can contribute to system slugishness. Please tell me what kind of antivirus you are using, what you have starting up on your system and also how much CPU usage you have and Processes ( you may have lots of things starting up when you boot the machine )

thanks yeah I use AVG free antivirus.
the startup program that open are JAva
AVG
Zonealarm
Sidebar
WIndows updates
My printer and around like 4 more
memory usage is around 551mb
Cpu usage goes up and down so I would say an average of 35%
and processses are 51 different names I cant recognize!
