Remote desktop

Currently i am away at college and my mother is having trouble with her computer, so I am wishing to do a remote desktop, but my home computer is behind a router and we are using two different internet connections. I am dumbfounded by this, I am running Windows 7 ultimate and my mother is running windows Xp Pro.

I tried that but i cant type in her local ip adress (ie 192.168.1.100) but rather the ip that the isp assigned her. This is where im haveing problems, because im not sure if i need to type in the isp adress with the port for rdp, I already forwarded that port in the router.

if you're trying to connect to a computer using RDP that's on the same local area network that you're on then you can connect with the local address.

(i.e 192.168.1.100).

if you're in a different building, and don't have any kind of VPN solution in place you'll need to do the following.

First, configure the router at your mums house to forward requests to port 3389 (the port that RDP uses), to the local address of your mums computer.

now you should find that if you make a request from your computer to the external (internet) address at your mums house, (which she can find by going to www.whatismyip.com) you should get a login prompt.


you should also note that allowing ports to be forwarded to a computer exposes the computer on the internet, so anyone can connect to the computer, (obviously not everyone can log on unless they guess the password correctly).

I don't think you will be able to do it without visiting her house and setting up port forwarding on her router. Like root said. You could try to talk her through setting up a hamachi VPN and then remote desktoping to her hamachi IP address. It's free and I have used it before.
