Hello,

I'm in the market for a new video card. Something that will give me a significant improvement over my 9800GTX, and hopefully will last me a while. I mostly play WoW and regardless what some of you might think about the game it takes a lot from you card. I get 20fps in boss fight with mid/low settings, but I game in window mode + full and that takes the most impact on my fps. I have two 24" monitors.

I would like the card to be around $300 but if there is something really great out there I might end up spending more.

I was told that September 10 is when the prices will drop, but I looked at some of the prices on newegg and I don't see any good discounts…. I know that the new ati cards will be out soon, are they any good? I always been an Nvidi fan, maybe I should just go for like GTX280 or something?

Thanks.

the new ati cards will be out shortly

they will own any card out there now,

if u want a really good card right now
and ur willing to spend alot! then go for the gtx 295, its nvidia

Should be the fastest card on the market when it comes out.

We also know that RV870 is 2.1 billion transistors. GT200 is 1.4 billion and RV770 is ~1 billion. Die size is 338mm2, GT200 65nm is 570mm2 and RV770 is 256mm2. It's also very long at 10.5", that's the same length as the HD 4870 x2/ GTX 2xx and a full 1" longer than the HD 4870.

Black PCB too, this is the first time AMD has used a black PCB since the HD 4870 X2, they must be very proud of it.

I think a 5870 is going to be an overkill for WoW. I'd hope you plan on playing something more graphic intensive if you purchased one.

I play wow right now with a 4870 and I have not experienced lag issues.

I also run everything on highest setting except the view distance. (Only have 2gb ram)

5870 looks very nice. but the $400 price tag might be a bit 2 much for my liking.... i dunno...maybe. You guys got me convinced. I will wait for the new ati cards. Should be by the end of this month correct?

And I do plan on playing other games :) I get Crysis the 1st day it was available, but only was able to get to the 1st or 2nd boss (the tank) after that kind of stopped playing. Hopefully with my new upcoming PC I will have the motivation to beat the game whahahaha.

EDIT:

Here is what I was able to find:

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15434/65/

"We received some details about the name of the chip that ATI codenamed Cypress which we have called RV870. The internal generation codename is Evergreen and this name represents the entire DirectX 11 generation of ATI cards.

The top card is named Radeon HD 5870 but the company plans two versions, one with 2GB memory and one with 1GB.

The Radeon HD 5870 1GB should sell for $399 at launch, while Radeon HD 5870 2GB should sell for $449. At the same time, the slower Radeon HD 5850 with 1GB memory will sell for $299. The launch date for all three cards is September 23rd in Europe whereas in the US we are talking about the 22nd."

"We finally figured out out the final specification of the chip that we called RV870 and the fact that AMD plans to call it Radeon HD 5870 doesn't come as a big surprise. The chip works at 800MHz and has 1600 shaders, two times more than RV770 which indicates that the chip is two times faster than the year old RV770.

The chip has as many as 2.1 billion transistors and is more than twice the number the RV770 packs, which has 956 million transistors. The card uses GDDR5 memory clocked at 1.3GHz (5.2GHz in quad mode) and can provide more than 150GB/second bandwidth. The power of this card stays at 180W while in idle the power drops down to 27W, three times less than the 90W on 4870.

By a rough specification-based estimate, the Radeon HD 5870 could end up two times faster than the Radeon HD 4870 but realistically, you should expect the new card to be faster by about 60 percent across the board."

The 5870 is going to be $399, the 5850 will be $299, supposedly.

So if your range is $300, grab a 5850.

i think ATI could do really well aganst Nvidia this time around, who else thinks this?
They did really well against Nvidia last time around. GT300 isn't due until December-January.

ik, if they did that well last time, and this new card is suppost to be 'twice as fast'

i cant imagine what a 1Ghz core clock 5870/90/Toxic could dish out...
