4870 X2 vs 2x 4890s in Crossfire?

Which is better?

What's the difference?

I have sufficient power/cooling to handle either.

I want to run Dual Monitors, so I'm thinking dual 4890s would be better for me?

Activate crossfire if I need max power on 1 screen, or have 1 card for each monitor (no crossfire) for running dual?


I might be waiting until October to get my 2nd monitor/GPU anyway, at which point the high-end DX11 cards from ATI (HD 5800 series) should be on the market.

Maybe I'll run my primary monitor on a 5870, and my secondary on a 4890?

I'm guessing two 4890s will be faster since a 4870x2 is like identical to the performance of two 4870s [actually a bit slower].

Cost difference I don't really know, I'm to lazy to look up, and well you probably already know that.

If they cost around the same, the two 4890s would be the better choice.

If you have a 4890 already as it shows in your sig, it'd probably be cheaper no?

And/or you could wait for the newer cards like you said.

The parts for the rig in my sig are being shipped to me atm, all except the GPU which I need to wait for a PayPal transaction to clear to my bank before I can order it.

2x 4890s = ~$400
4870 X2 = ~$360

I think 2x 4890s will run faster in crossfire, as well as give me the option of having 1 for each monitor... Wasn't sure though.

Also yeah, waiting for the new card to see their prices, then I can move my 4890 to my secondary and have a new 5870 on my primary.

4890 in crossfire will be ALOT faster, more memory, higher clocks, better FPS all around, Just compare 4890 Single vs a 4870 single, which is betteR? 4890 crossfire obviously. Make sure your xfire runs in x32 or x16 so you have the correct speeds per card.

A 5870, not 4870 (the new cards that should be out by october).

But I assume itd just be the other way around, with the 4890 limiting the clock/memory.

When the 5800s come out, I'll probably just buy 1 for my primary monitor, then have my 4890 run my secondary monitor.

That shouldn't affect the 5870 if they're not in crossfire, right?
Would a 5870 by itself be better than trying to crossfire a 5870+4890?
