If you somehow (though I still don't know how) forced it into the PC the wrong way around then you may well have damaged it and it might be better to get a new cable - but then again you may also have damaged the USB socket you plugged it into, I would've thought you'd need a fair amount of force to get that in the wrong way.
I'd have a look at the cable and inspect it for damage. If it's bent or looks broken at all where it's been forced, might be a wise idea to get a new one.
