In terms of paid work where companies don't demand any formal qualifications, most of what I've seen has been web based - so in that case, having a thorough grounding in web technologies (HTML, Javascript, PHP, MySQL, AJAX etc.) would definitely be useful.
However, it really does depend on what job you want to go for, any useful languages are a bonus. C++ included. It might not often be the language of choice for most new projects, but it's still out there on a heck of a lot of old ones and in a lot of cases it certainly will help you get a job, it's far from useless!
