Radeon HD4870 X2 2GB DDR5 PCI Express

Are you running Win7 x64? It really uses about twice the ram as Vista x64, but every upgrade to windows has. Win7 does have a lot going on in the background, and you can shut it off, but if you've got the resources available it will run faster. Sure I could turn that all off and be down to probably 700MB, but indexing on a RAID0 does help.

Hmm. Im using the 32bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate on a laptop with 1GB of memory and an old celeron processor, its a smooth operator. I dont see how the 64bit version would need 4X the amount of ram than the 32bit version just to run the OS.

or not since the article you quoted was written before RC1 even was announced for download. Those are the BETA requirements.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-system-requirements-hardware-rc,7701.html

Or any search of a site that has updated information.

But as quoted on Toms Hardware "he only real changes to the system requirements since January are slightly bumped up ones for the 64-bit version, though we suspect anyone who plans to run the x64 build will have a machine that's way beyond the minimum (having at least 4 GB of RAM would be a good starting point)."

That most x64 systems will have at least 4 GB of Ram.

As far as it running on less, because of MS's new service administrator, services are automatically shutoff when not needed to insure maximum performance. So yeah you can run a system with less, but with current prices of ram, why would you?
