We are new to this help?

Me and a friend were looking through his basement full of stuff and we found two old computers one is a Compaq G500(windows 95) and the other is a eMachines T3522(windows XP) which was fried so everything works except the thing the power cord plugs into (the main thing we want to change) and we are mixing and matching parts. So are these parts compatible or are we just putting random parts together. We are just screwing around and both aren't used. And if it doesn't work we are just selling the important parts on Amazon.com or ebay.com

We know what most of this is but what is the thing the power cords plug into?

Is it going to be okay to swap the hard disks? Or is there going to be a compatibility issue with other hardware?

All of the power cords originate from the Power Supply, The PSU.

You can swap hard disks but you will need to reinstall the operating systems most likely. Every OS installation keeps a hardware profile and if it change drastically or too many parts at once, it will require you to reactivate windows. Sometimes it just doesn't load windows at all. These machines sound like great Linux boxes to fool around with.

Aditionl details: Does it matter in which order its connected we currently have it Board > CD Drive > Hard drive with the Big grey strip.

Ok.. other friend here.. we have the PSU, but we don't know what order the gray strip goes for connecting the hard drive, the floppy drive, and the cd/dvd drive.. or does it matter? (i'm sorry if our computer terms aren't great)

You can swap PSU's as long as it meets the PC's power requirements, which sounds like it won't be more than 250-300w.

The grey strip is called an IDE cable. And Floppies have their own cable called FDD which is a little narrower. Most older boards have two IDE headers. If you are using one harddrive, just plug the cable in to the HDD and the board.

P8 and P9 are just letting you know what power plug number that is, Chances are, the largest connector from the PSU is labeled P1, and the 4pin EPS (aux processor power) connector is labeled P2, etc, etc...You just need to make sure the necessities are plugged in. The largest connector, the 20/24 pin ATX, the auxiliary 4/8 pin power plug, and the 4 pin Molex plugs (or flat connectors) are plugged into the CD drive, and harddrives. You can use any molex for any device.

If the board has two headers, just use a different cable for each type of devices. One cable for harddrives, one cable for CD drives.

We found out the older PCU doesn't have the correct ports so we are just ordering a new one online or putting everything on the old motherboaard for now.

We don't want to put everything on the old motherboard because its an old CPU and ol has 4 mb of Ram (we think, thas what it says atleast.)

ok, update.. all power works, the hard drive and the cd/dvd drive.. (cd/dvd drive is jammed tho, not big deal, at least it works)

the moniter isn't working, and we don't know if it's cuz the hard drive doesn't know what to do, or because the moniter just isn't working right..
